President’s Report to Tennessee Counseling Association

Professional Development

TACES is support a pre-conference in conjunction with the TCA conference to take place on November 22, 2008.  All plans have been finalized as Dr. Deryl Bailey has accepted and confirmed that he will be presenting.  TACES will provide an honorarium and the cost of Dr. Bailey’s travel. He will not be staying overnight.  Pre-conference title:  Empowering Youth: Closing the Achievement Gap for Minority Youth.  The intended audience includes teachers, counselors, and school counselors.  Dr. Bailey successfully oversees a program that has impacted the drop out rate of students attending Athens Georgia schools.

TACES has sent out flyers in support of the pre-conference and this appears to have increased the number of paid attendees.  Prior to the flyers there were only 7 attendees. Currently we have 12 attendees and hoping that more will sign up on the day of the event.

Graduate Student Development

TACES identified and nominated two graduate students to attend this years Emerging Leaders Workshop at the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision.  The students received a stipend from SACES to help defray the cost of their attendance.  These students will also receive a stipend on behalf of TACES in support of their leadership role at their perspective institutions.  Whitney Locke, University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Jean Johnson, University of Memphis- Memphis were are representatives.

Tara Jungerson as past attendee at the SACES Emerging Leaders Workshop has agreed to be this year’s student graduate representative for TACES. Tara has already identified some areas she wishes to address.  Tara is seeking to provide opportunities for grad students such as career support and networking.  TACES looks forward to supporting Tara and feel this is a prime opportunity to recruit more students into the profession and the organization.

Future Plans

Plans are in the works for future workshops and seminars sponsored by TACES.  These shall be discussed at the planned business meeting scheduled to be held in conjunction with the TCA conference.  The meeting is scheduled for Monday 4-5.  Location is not known at this time.

Nominations are being sought for leadership positions for TACES.  President elect-elect and Secretary are the open positions.  A number of members will be unable to attend to the business meeting.  At this time, the bylaws are being checked to see if elections can be postponed til Spring 2009 to allow more members to vote or if voting by proxy would be an option.
