LCA Update for Board Meeting 11/17/07

Lookout Counselors Association began the year with a Governing Council meeting of the new officers on September 10^th. They are President – Judy Steele, Past-President/Awards Chair – Sylvia Dance, President-Elect – Rita Waller, Secretary – Tara Jungersen, Treasurer – Ed Watson, College Fair Chairman – Christie Maupin, Scholarship Chairman – Valerie Brown, and Membership – Carol Coley.

 We set up our meeting dates, which may be subject to change based on membership needs. They are as follows:

October 22, 2007                    5:30 p.m.

December 3, 2007                   5:30 p.m.

February 4, 2008                     5:30 p.m.

March 3, 2008                         5:30 p.m.

April 7, 2008                            5:30 p.m.

May 3 or May 5, 2008 as possible Mini-conference dates.

 Our biggest goal is to increase membership. Along with that we would like to increase our number of Mental Health Professionals. We thank TCA/TMHCA for sharing their Mental Health Professionals mailing list with us. We plan to use e-mail and postcards to publicize our meetings.

 Our College Fair at UTC’s McKenzie Arena, was held September 20 and 21. We had between 75 and 100 Colleges in attendance. Monies raised at this event help to sponsor our scholarships for students going into or continuing their education in education and counseling.

 Our first meeting featured our secretary, Tara Jungersen. She spoke on the psychiatric hospitalization process and community resources. The LCA Chapter may consider contacting local institutions to try to improve coordination of care when a client or student is hospitalized; given the restrictions school counselors have in initiating contact with institutions due to their school district’s requirements. Much discussion and questions followed. All in attendance felt it was very beneficial. 

TCA President, Anna Shelsky, reported on her recent attendance to the Southern ACA Leadership Conference. She encouraged members to vote in the upcoming TCA election for Secretary. She, also, encouraged attendance at the TCA Conference in Franklin in November.

Our next meeting will be December 3, 2007, at Chattanooga State. Dr. Shawn Spurgeon will speak on counseling African-American clients. Supper will be sponsored by Chattanooga State Admissions.
